Tools are items that are equipped in the "Shovel" slot. The player can only equip one tool at a time.
Their purpose is to allow the player to dig through different kinds of walls.
All characters - excluding Monk, Dove, and Dorian - always start with the Normal Shovel.
Picking up a shovel with a higher grade overwrites the previous one (it does not drop); otherwise it drops normally.
Grades for shovels are:
Blood Shovel will no longer overwrite or be overwritten by other shovels.

Breaks upon taking damage. Can be used to dig a shop wall without being gigantic but will shatter in the process.
Ability to dig is tied with the Groove Chain.
Digging a level 2 wall or higher will deal 0.5 hearts of damage to the player and automatically digs all adjacent walls (see figure).
Digging while gigantic will not consume health.

Ability to dig most tiles, but tougher walls require multiple hits to dig up.
|If a wall is already cracked, such as one leading to a Health Shop (3 hits), the player will still need to dig the wall a standard number of times (3 hits).|

Automatically digs all adjacent walls (see figure).
| Increases attack damage by 1.
The player can attempt to dig adjacent walls even if the targeted wall is too hard. This is a valid action and will not cause a missed beat if at least one tile is successfully dug.
