Chests and other containers are found scattered around the crypt. They contain items that will help the player and can be found lying out in the open, within hidden rooms or to be purchased in the shop. The Monocle item can see inside of chests, crates and barrels (even those found in the shop).

Chest Contains Notes
Food, Torches, Shovels, Backpacks, Holsters, Bombs, Helmet, Drums, Charms Can also be a Mimic enemy. Mimics will begin to move when the player is next to it, and will attack when activated.
Spells, Scrolls, Rings Originally, spells came in a white chest.
Armor, Weapons, Footwear

Unknown Requires a blue key found on the same level. Can also be a Mimic.
Crate

Crate

Occasionally drops an item when destroyed, containing items from the black and red chests or heart containers. Otherwise contains an enemy or gold. Can be pushed by attacking it from an adjacent tile.

Becomes permanently stuck if pushed into water or tar.

Can be destroyed with an explosion, spike trap or by hitting it with at least 3 damage.

Pushing it down a trapdoor will reveal its contents on the next level.

Note that using the weapons like the Cat or the Whip will hit Crates, Barrels, and Urns from far away by exploiting the system of how the weapons target enemies.

Barrel

Barrel

Occasionally drops an item when destroyed, containing items from the red and black chests or heart containers. Otherwise contains an enemy or gold. Pushing it will send it rolling one square per beat until it hits something or enters water/tar. If the player is hit, they will take 0.5 damage. Enemies will not take damage. Regular dirt walls will be destroyed if hit.

Can be destroyed with an explosion, spike trap or by hitting it with at least 3 damage.

Pushing it down a trapdoor will reveal its contents on the next level.

Teh urn

Teh Urn

Rare. Usually contains a powerful item, a spell and a food item. Can be pushed by attacking it from an adjacent tile.

Becomes permanently stuck if pushed into water or tar.

Any source of 5 damage breaks an urn in one hit, including weapons, Red Dragon and roofpig fireballs, Ogre clubs, and fireball scrolls.

Has 3 health. Any source of non-weapon damage does 1 damage to an urn if not enough to break it instantly, including Earthquake Scroll, Boots of Pain, bombs, and fireball spells without Ring of Mana. Spike traps do 1 damage to it and destroy themselves. Pushing it down a trapdoor deals 1 damage to it and causes it to appear on the next level, with previously dealt damage still applied and revealing its contents if destroyed.

Due to the way bombs work, opening it with a bomb will destroy one of the items unless the final bomb is placed to the left of the urn.

Contrary to popular belief, the Dagger of Phasing has no special effect on urns.
